The FFM was created at the initiative of the Former Students Association of the Medical School of the University of São Paulo (FMUSP) with a very clear objective: to act in the promotion of teaching, research and assistance offered by FMUSP and its hospital complex, HCFMUSP.
Two years later, the Foundation signed, together with HCFMUSP and the São Paulo State Health Secretariat (SES-SP), the Comprehensive Health Care Agreement for SUS Patients, thus reaffirming its commitment to providing comprehensive medical care of quality to society, among other health actions.
During this period, an extensive Project for the Restoration and Modernization of the FMUSP facilities was carried out with the fundamental support of the FFM. Throughout the process, in addition to the recovery of historical heritage, a human and cultural change was also promoted in the entire FMUSP-HC System community. The Medical School building was completely renovated, as well as other buildings on the campus, with the construction of new facilities to house the infrastructure and improve the logistics of work processes. Both Project coordination and fundraising were shared by FFM and FMUSP.
In 2008, the Foundation became a Social Organization, thus expanding its participation in the management of health care projects. The change made it possible to modernize control systems and processes, without the need for a significant increase in the direct administration team. In the same year, the Institution signed a management contract for the activities and health services of the Cancer Institute of the State of São Paulo (ICESP), a tertiary hospital highly specialized in oncology, which serves SUS patients for complex treatments coming from all over the state.
A contract is signed with the FFM for the management of the Lucy Montoro Rehabilitation Institute (IRLM). Inaugurated in September 2009, the Institute was designed to be a center of excellence in treatment, teaching and research in Rehabilitation.
During the health emergency imposed by the covid-19 pandemic in March 2020, FFM acted in complete integration with the management bodies of FMUSP and HCFMUSP to convert the Central Institute of HCFMUSP (ICHC) into an exclusive treatment center for patients with the coronavirus, among other actions. The Institution played an undisputed role in providing legal support to the agreements that were signed with public bodies and private institutions, in enabling the immediate hiring of an external workforce to provide the ICHC with health professionals and in the acquisition of equipment and inputs.
Over the years, the FFM Board has faced, with seriousness and competence, all the economic difficulties experienced in the country. Even in the face of the numerous obstacles observed in the health sector, the Foundation has remained solid and stable, fulfilling its mission to offer society comprehensive health care in the units under its management.
