Responsible for providing complete assistance at all levels of health care, the Academic Health System at the Medical School of the University of São Paulo / Hospital das Clínicas (FMUSP-HC System) is currently the largest university health center in Latin America. In addition to acting in teaching, research and assistance, it also encourages and develops cultural and extension activities with an emphasis on multidisciplinarity and multi-institutionality.
While academic activities are developed at FMUSP, Hospital das Clínicas focuses on high-complexity health care (tertiary/quaternary care), being a reference in care for serious cases. For medium-complexity care (secondary care), the System relies on the USP Universitary Hospital (HU). Primary care is offered by the Butantã School Health Center and Basic Health Units. The System is completed by: the Extension Service for the Care of HIV/AIDS Patients; the Integrated Center for Translational Medicine; the Institute of Tropical Medicine; the Cancer Institute of the State of São Paulo (ICESP); the Lucy Montoro Rehabilitation Institute (IRLM); the Capital Death Verification Service (SVOC) and two support institutions, the Fundação Faculdade de Medicina (FFM) and the Zerbini Foundation.
Medicine School of the University of São Paulo (FMUSP) – It was founded in 1912, had its headquarters built in 1931 and, since 1934, has been part of the University of São Paulo. The School offers five undergraduate courses (Medicine, Physiotherapy, Speech Therapy, Occupational Therapy and Medical Physics) and is recognized for its pioneering spirit and excellence in teaching and research. In 2022, FMUSP completed 110 years of existence as one of the largest medical-scientific research centers in the country, with 66 medical research laboratories (LIMs), 230 research groups and an expressive intellectual production, with an average publication of 1,300 scientific articles per year.
Hospital das Clínicas da FMUSP (HCFMUSP) – Created in 1944, it has around 2,400 beds distributed among its eight specialized institutes, two Auxiliary Hospitals, a rehabilitation division, an Associated Hospital and a Convention Center. It also has the Permanent Education School (EEP), which promotes education for health professionals, health education for the general community, as well as a space to house startups and innovation laboratories (InovaHC District).
Zerbini Foundation – Foundation governed by private law that works to promote agility and administrative efficiency at Instituto do Coração – InCor (Heart Institute), as well as to raise additional funds.
Cancer Institute of the State of São Paulo (Icesp) – Provides assistance to around 116,000 patients in a humane way, with high technical quality, in addition to developing research and teaching activities in all areas related to oncology.
Lucy Montoro Rehabilitation Institute (IRLM) – Provides more complex care for people with disabling physical disabilities, through comprehensive and integrated rehabilitation treatment. It has a technological structure and highly qualified professionals in diagnostic and therapeutic resources.
USP Universitary Hospital (HU) – Located on the Cidade Universitária Campus, it opened in 1981 and is a community teaching hospital dedicated to teaching, research and the extension of services to society.
Samuel Barnsley Pessoa School Health Center (CSE Butantã) – FMUSP teaching-assistance unit that is dedicated to teaching and research in the area of primary care and care for the population of Butantã, in the western region of São Paulo city.
Institute of Tropical Medicine (IMT-FMUSP) – Designed for research, teaching and assistance in the area of tropical diseases, the Institute is the only one of its kind in the State of São Paulo.
Capital Death Verification Service (SVOC) – The agency is linked to FMUSP and is responsible for clarifying the cause of death in cases of death due to a non-defined disease or without medical assistance, occurred in the city of São Paulo.
